OLIVE

Operating in the agriculture industry since 1960, the Bilici family performs olive farming activities since 2005, in one of the largest olive groves in Turkey, located in Ceyhan, Adana over a land of 11,000 decares, with the aim of producing high-quality olive oil. Biltar, initially imported rooted cuttings of Barnea, Picual, Frontoio and Leccino species from Australia, to use in the olive oil market. Later, in 2006, the product range was extended to include local species (Gemlik and Ayvalık) suitable for the region. An olive grove of 500 decares was established in the first place. Later, in 2007, the grove was extended to 954 decares with the re-planting of Nizip and Saurani species, as well as other David imported species. The olive trees planted in the grove is raised for machine harvesting, through joint projects with university research teams. The progress targets for the species are as follows: achievement of yield following the 4th year; extraction of 17-18% extra-virgin olive oil per yield following the 7th year, with periodic crops of 50 kg fruit per tree. A fully computer-controlled irrigation and fertilization system called “Auto-Agronom” has been imported from Israel, and is utilized on a 800-decare olive grove, as a first in Turkey. This state-of-the-art system provides 50% saving on water and fertilizer consumption, compared to conventional methods. The system enables pesticide spraying and irrigation for the olives without human touch.

The initially planted 500-decare parcel features the following inter-row and row-top distances: 7m x 2.5m. The next 350-decare area is ridge-planted with a distance of 6m x 2m.

The primary olive groves and tree species are as follows: Gemlik, Ayvalık, Savrani, Barnea, Picual, Leccino, Frontoio. The overall number of olive trees planted by Biltar is 100,000.
